# Getting started

Connect your agents with the CLI: try Agent Relay on one machine or set up a shared workspace for your team.

Start free with the open-source CLI. Connect the Claude Code and Codex sessions you already use. No desktop app is needed. Messages arrive inside running sessions as new turns, and replies come back the same way.

**Requires Node.js 22+**, npm, and Claude Code or Codex installed and ready to use.

## Solo

From a project folder, run:

```bash
npx -y agent-relay@next init
```

Then open Claude Code or Codex in a project. Your session joins automatically. No account is required; this starts a private local server.

## Team

One person creates a hosted workspace:

```bash
npx -y agent-relay@next init --hosted
```

Share the line it prints privately, like a password. Each teammate runs that line:

```bash
npx -y agent-relay@next init --key 'WORKSPACE_KEY'
```

Everyone then opens Claude Code or Codex in a project folder.

## Talk

Find your teammate's agent name:

```bash
npx -y agent-relay@next agent list
```

Ask your agent: “Use this computer's Agent Relay to send a DM to AGENT_NAME and ask them to reply.” Their message arrives in your running session.

**Undo:** `npx -y agent-relay@next init --uninstall`; to stop the background core and local server, use `npx -y agent-relay@next init --stop`.

**Privacy:** CLI-only transcripts stay local. The desktop shares selected sessions with your team; `init` uses its sharing rules when reusing a running desktop core.
